In the late 1800's, a rough cat's-eye of over 700 carats was discovered and in 1930, the stone was shaped into a 465 carat cabochon.
This cat's-eye, named "The Eye of the Lion" is the largest in the world and represents one of the greatest gemstone finds in the history of Sri Lanka.
Alexandrite from Horana is never as vividly colored as those from the Ural Mountains in Russia. Some exceptionally large cymophane (cat's eye) as well as large alexandrite have been found, including some that produced gemstones exceeding 65 carats.
