Alexandrite engagement ring

Alexandrite is a remarkable gemstone featuring all the qualities needed for a perfect engagement or wedding ring: rarity, beauty, durability and history. Alexandrite is the only gem, which has a real nobility and exclusivity feel to it, regardless of the quality (you need to spend a fortune on a top range sapphire or diamond to have this feel).

Old Russian Alexandrite Ring

Hi,
Very nice ring, but it is not "Alexandrite eye" ( or Cat's Eye). Most Alexandrites from USSR or to be more specific, most Alexandrites sold in Russia during last centiry are actually corundum laced with vanadium to produce the color change. So, you will need to get a certificate for this stone from the respectful laboratory, such as America Gem Society Laboratories (AGSL) or Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and if it's a natural Russian alexandrite, this ring will worth a fortune.

Re: In need of Help Identifying...

Hi, I was looking through an old parcel of stones I had from years back and I came across this stone, I believe that it's an Alexandrite, But I am not an expert. It weights about 1.5 cts and is almost flawless, It's almost hard to believe, thats why I am in need of help identifying. The color is greenish blue and is about 60-75% color change, cause it doesn't really turn pinkish purple until you hold a lighter or flame under it, the flash on the camera is the best to see the color change! Can anyone please help me, Below is a picture of the green color with no flash and the pink with the camera flash. I only cropped the photos because of the 5MB limit.
dosnt look real, does it have an inclustions.

Re: My mother has an Alexandrite ring she may wish to sell

Hi Tracy,
It is unlikely that you have Russian alexandrite. Besides, experts in late 19th century antique jewelry acknowledge strong color resemblances between Brazilian and Russian alexandrites, but the Russian stones are said to be slightly darker and less clean than their Brazilian cousins. There are many gemologists that can distinguish between natural and synthetic alexandrites, but few have ever had the opportunity to study any Russian stones.
The retail replacement cost for a 1ct. alexandrite could be anywhere between $500 to $12,000 per carat. Russian origins of the stone won't really play any role in the pricing, because the intensity of the color change and the attractiveness of the colors are the most important factors in determining the value of an alexandrite gemstone.
Anyway, your first and most most important step is to get identification certificate for your alexandrite from the reputable gemological laboratory. After you ensure that your alexandrite is natural, you can appraise your ring. Your best choice is a professional appraiser from a major appraisal organizations, with standards of education and codes of ethics. Contact The American Society of Appraisers
I am very sad to say that i am going to sell my aleandrite ring. The stone is from multicolur. It is a 1.05 ct. The ring is white gold with .32ct diamonds in the setting. I have all the paperwork and pictures. It would make a great christmas present. I have over $4,000 invested. You can email me at
spencerd150@gmail.com
Thanks
Drew

Natural alexandrite investment potential?

In less than certain economic times, silver, gold, and natural gemstones have traditionally been sought as hard investment alternatives to cash which seems to be in a process of devaluation in many parts of the world.
Although many analysts are predicting that the US dollar will continue its downward trend, commodities prices (gems and metals including) are still based in U.S. dollars and fine rare gemstones should continue their appreciation in the months to come.
While it look like diamond prices have been soft, prices for tourmaline, alexandrite, color change garnets, spinel, fine sapphires have more than doubled.
Is it ( fine gemstones) good investment or at least safe harbour for cash? Surely new iPad may be a lot of fun but it will be obsolete in 3-5 months. Gold and silver takes a lot of space.

Re: Contact information for Alexandrite Tsarstone Collectors Guide

Dear Lee Anna
There are very few real experts in the world of alexandrite and many who think they are. I can immedietaly tell you that there is not even one expert in each country! Justa few in the world! if you want to get a real evaluation. I would advice you to: you may have it evaluated in Oklahoma City by a jeweler, gemologist and this person may have a little clue about its autenticity and value. I would also recommend you NOT to leave this stone with someone. Alexandrites, if of good quality, known provenance are very special and may be very valuable. Large russian stones fetch very high prices. There are a few collectors in the world who can really appreciate such stones. You could make a snapshot with a digital camera set to macro (flower symbol). Please excuse me for telling as I have no idea of your photography skills. In 1992 I was the first westerner since 1916, i.e. beofre the Russian revolution who sat my foot in the Ural Mountains, Russia alexandrite mines. I have just helped a friend research all original letters and documents regarding the first find in Swedish, french, german, russian and a book: "Alexandrite" is just in the printing office.
Best regards
Peter
Can you recommend a reputable jeweler in the Oklahoma City area with the expertise to appraise a rather large alexandrite that I've had for 40 years?
Please let me know.
Thank-You,
Lee Anna Coil

Re: Large clean chrysoberyls sells for around USD 200.00 per carat

Micheal,
It does look like a chrysoberyl. And it's really big. You need to get a strong fiber optic light and shine it through the stone to see if it's clean or if it changes color.
It doesn't look clean from the picture but some parts of it could be clean. Large clean chrysoberyls sells for around USD 200.00 per carat. (25cts.+) If not clean, they have to be very inexpensive like USD 10.00 per carat.
If it shows a decent color change, then you can cut some alexandrites and those don't need to be clean but the color of that rough doesn't look like it's alexandrite.
What kind of light did you shoot with?

Chrysoberyl rough weighing over 2984.9 ct was valued at 175.000 USD

An alexandrite piece of ore (chrysoberyl rough) weighing over 2984.9 ct (597 gr) was found at the Malyshevskoye deposit's (Russia) in 2000, was valued at 175.000 USD as an opening bid, but nobody wanted to buy it. Russian owners named it "Patriot" - a common practice for unique specimens.
After gemmologists from GOKHRAN - the official Russian depository for precious metals and gemstones, examined the specimen, the name "Patriot" was revoked and the specimen down valued to 15.000 USD.
But as David pointed out, such large pieces of rough could have value even if it doesn't have gemmy parts, as a unique specimen for the museum or private collection.

What's the difference between a Valuation and Appraisal?

Terms valuation and appraisal often used interchangeably for determining the value of gemstone or jewellery item, but there is a difference and it is important to know when a formal valuation is required as opposed to obtaining an appraisal.
Valuation is the calculation and assignment of the gemstone or jewellery item's financial value. Strictly speaking, - appraisal means the judgement, assessment and quantification of the jewellery piece or gemstone. This would include things like the quality and weight of the gold or platinum, the workmanship, the quality of the gemstones, their weight and dimensions etc.
Valuations are required when a definitive value is needed. Reasons for this include obtaining finance from a lending institution or establishing the value for an insurance purposes. A Court may also order that a valuation be obtained as part of the process of resolving a dispute.
Appraisals are only intended as a guide to pricing. Appraisals are estimated by knowledge of the local market and recent sale prices and should only ever be used as an estimate of price. They are not definitive and have no legal standing.

Re: Alexandrite engagement ring?

I would choose alexandrite for an engagement ring. Having a gemstone ring is becoming more and more popular because of the outrageous diamond prices. You can always get the ring set in a band with lots of little diamonds (pave style) that will cost A LOT less than one big diamond, and it will have beautiful sparkle.

Alexandrite engagement ring

An alexandrite engagement ring - is very nice choice. Alexandrite is a beautiful gemstone and an excellent stone for the ring, but it can be expensive... and I mean a lot more expensive than any diamond ring. Diamonds may be a girl's best friend (and they defiantly should be side stones in your ring), but an alexandrite rings is something very very special.
Here is a photo of a beautiful ring featuring a fine Indian Alexandrite. Alexandrites from this deposit are well known for their exceptional daylight blue green colors. The center stone is encircled by high quality diamonds that continue along the shank from every side and through out the under gallery.
