Chrysoberyl found in the Ilakaka deposit include vivid yellow-green and of the cat's eye variety and small quantities of alexandrite with a very good color change. Occasional large alexandrite crystals of gem quality were recovered in Lake Alaotra.

The government recently moved the gemstone buying area a few kilometers out of Ilakaka.
