I would really like to find out more about my alexandrite ring please

I would really like to find out more about my alexandrite ring please. i was going to actually sell it for ten pounds, I didnt realise the potential value of alexandrite. I am so glad I didnt!
If I describe it in detail, perhaps someone could tell me if it sounds 'nice'? I understand valuations can not be done, but maybe just a bit of guidance, or anything? Please?
Ok, the ring setting is gold, it has those extra 'shoulders' thst go from ether side of the ring to the 'nest' part where the stone sits. From the side view when ring is held upright with stone facing directly upwards, the prongs make the nest look just like an old fashioned crown, a kings or queens crown. There are 6 prong things.
Now the stone. I have been told by a very well established and highly respected jeweler that the stone is an alexandrite. I didnt get a valuation or anything, i was at work, and I just quickly showed it to him. he looked rather shocked to be honest.
The stone is oblong, measuring 14mm x 11mm. It is approximately 5mm deep, but thats quite hard to measure because of the nest/setting. I think its pretty accurate though.
The colour... depends on the light and the angle I hold it at! At first glance, i would say purple, warm purple. Then where the light catches it, again depending how I hold it up, the is a deffinate blue tinge. Sometimes, there even seems to be a sort of goldish/tannish/yellowish hue, but its not easy to spot to be honest. Seems easier to pick the yellowy hint out when I hold it by the window.
Well, as Ive said, its onlong in shape. The very topside (is that the face?) is flat, and has a, like a bevelled edge that slants outward and downward, almost like the roof on a house? Then the edge meets the underside edges which mirror what Ive just described. However, the underside is not flat like the upper side. it resembles the roof of a house again, but this time viewing the house roof from the top, instead of from side on like above. So, the underside is made up of four sides, the front of the roof, the back of the roof, and the gables of the roof which are smaller than the front and side. The front, back and sides (gables) of the underside are very gently ridged, with the ridges very neatly going from side to side, not up and down.
I can post a few photos but I know they are rubbish, I took them with my mobile phone. However, maybe a rubbish description couple with rubbish photo's might present a slightly clearer picture of my ring?
I doubt it is worth much, Im never lucky like that! I am curious though, maybe it's going to be my lucky ring, maybe it IS valuable! However, i shall not live in too much hope. I shall just go now and give it a good wash. Since I have been studying it so hard to describe it to you, I have realised that it is mucky. very mucky! :) I do hope someone will tell me if it sounds like it MAY possibly be a good ring, or if it sounds like I have got nothing but rubbish.
Thankyou very much indeed anyone who bothers to read all of this, i am extremely grateful if you have got to the end here.
Respectfully Yours,
from the healer and calmer of animals.

Re: My Brazilian Alexandrite purchased 1987

Fortune smiled on me in 1987 and I found a very fine quality Alexandrite from the first Brazilian find. It has a complete color change from deep emerald green in brilliant sunlight to a deep raspberry red in candle light. It is a little less than 1/2 carat. Anyone have any idea what it would be worth in resale today?
well its not worth as much as russian, it depends on the quaility

Phenomenal gemstones

Change of Color
Color change garnet is one of the most rare, interesting, and phenomenal of all gemstones. The color change can be intense and equal to the color change of top quality alexandrite and fine color change garnets can easily be mistaken for alexandrite. Some of the best stones are from the deposit in Bekily, Southern Madagascar. Stones from this mine are well known for their strong alexandrite like color change.
Change of color is not the same as the changes in color with crystal orientation that affects tourmaline and iolite, which are due to the optical property called pleochroism. Only rare tourmalines, garnets and alexandrite absorb certain wavelengths of light so strongly that in sunlight and indoor light they appear different colors.
Chatoyancy
"Chatoyance" is French for cat's-eye. When impurity minerals occur in fibers, they give gemstones a silky appearance. When the fibers line up along one of the crystalline axes, a stone can be cut to display a bright reflective line—a special effect called cat's-eye.
Pictured cat's eye chrysoberyl is also known as cymophane. The name being derived from the Greek words cyma and phanes, meaning “wave” and “appearance.” Microscopic needle-like inclusions inside the stone reflect a streak of light known as the cat’s eye.
The cat's eye’s inclusions are aligned parallel to the crystallographic axis and they are always cut as cabochons with the fibrous need-like inclusions running across the narrow part of the stone as this is the only way to display the effect properly.

Alexandrite mining in Ilakaka

Ilakaka is located more than 150 miles east of Tulear. The road from Tulear is paved and in excellent condition. As in most parts of Madagascar, there are few cars and more pedestrians and cattle. This part of south central Madagascar is high dessert plain, - warm or hot in the day and windy and cool at night. Before the discovery of gems, the only attraction was the nearby Isalo national park known especially for its unique painted rock formations and there are an estimated 300,000 hand-miners in the Ilakaka area working in the field at present day.
The town of Ilakaka is only two or three years old. There are perhaps 100 small one or two storey hastily built shanty/buildings with wooden shutters instead of glass windows. The buildings include gem offices, two or three room hotels, clothes stalls, petrol pumps and garages. This town is here for the gems and I cannot imagine any other reason for its existence. The highlights include the Thai hotel/ restaurant 2 km outside of town and the Les Renes De L’Isalo (Hotel in the Rocks) in the national park about 10 km away. A small grass airstrip lies outside of town near Les Renes De L’Isalo. The government recently moved the gemstone buying area a few kilometers out of town.

Obtala Resources agrees licensing deal with Gemstones of Africa

Obtala Resources has signed an option agreement that gives fellow AIM listed mining group Gemstones of Africa the exclusive right to explore and mine for gemstones on six mining licences and one prospecting licence in Tanzania that are currently held by Obtala.
The six mining licences lie in the Manyara area of Tanzania, adjacent to Lake Manyara . The area is known for a variety of gemstones including emeralds, alexandrite, ruby, garnet and spinet. These mining licences are contiguous covering a total area of six sqkm. The prospecting licence is located at Matombo, in the Morogoro District, an area known for hosting ruby and other gemstones.
Gemstones chief executive, David Hargreaves, said the company intended to pursue the principle of mine-to-market operation, servicing dedicated customer outlets. "Tanzania is a fertile source of gemstones and offers a progressive investment profile", he said.

Ilakaka alexandrite deposit location

I think there are sone alexandrites found at Vatomandry. The Vatomandry gemstone deposit was discovered in September 2000. Access to the mining area, which lies along the Sakanila River, requires traveling on a dirt road approximately 30 km southwest of the coastal town of Vatomandry, which is located 140 km south of Toamasina.
Soon after some rubies was found there, several thousand miners moved in. However, the Malagasy government closed the area to mining in February 2001, and all trading and exporting of the gems were prohibited.
