Natural alexandrite investment potential?

In less than certain economic times, silver, gold, and natural gemstones have traditionally been sought as hard investment alternatives to cash which seems to be in a process of devaluation in many parts of the world.
Although many analysts are predicting that the US dollar will continue its downward trend, commodities prices (gems and metals including) are still based in U.S. dollars and fine rare gemstones should continue their appreciation in the months to come.
While it look like diamond prices have been soft, prices for tourmaline, alexandrite, color change garnets, spinel, fine sapphires have more than doubled.
Is it ( fine gemstones) good investment or at least safe harbour for cash? Surely new iPad may be a lot of fun but it will be obsolete in 3-5 months. Gold and silver takes a lot of space.
